Sunmi on Her Comeback: ‘Even After 17 Years Since Debut, I Still Get Nervous but Enjoy the Tension’
Sunmi, in her 17th year of debut, expressed her feelings about her comeback
On October 17th, Sunmi held a showcase for her digital single “STRANGER” in Seoul.
Regarding her comeback, Sunmi mentioned that it still feels challenging for her despite her 17 years of experience in the industry, “Even though it’s my 17th year since debut, I’m always nervous and excited when I’m on a new stage. I haven’t been able to overcome that tension yet, but I think it’s a good thing.”
“STRANGER” is an album that portrays Sunmi as an artist like no other. Sunmi is set to present her unique music and concept, breaking away from the typical framework, with a captivating story driven by unfamiliar emotions and love.
In this digital single album, Sunmi participated in producing all three songs, including the title track “STRANGER,” “Calm Myself,” and “Call My Name.”
This marks Sunmi’s first solo comeback after approximately 2 years since the release of “TAIL” in 2021. The MV promises to showcase Sunmi’s distinctive style with an unconventional storyline and appealing visuals.
Sunmi said, “I’ve been in the industry for 17 years as a solo artist for 10 years, so I wasn’t thinking about showing a completely new side. Instead, I wanted to emphasize the aspect of ‘This is who Sunmi is, don’t you all know?’ I wanted to show my true self.”
Sunmi also explained her approach to outfits and performances to enhance the feeling of the song. She mentioned that her outfits were set on fire and doused in coffee to bring out the desired effect.
She also discussed her performance, “I wanted to show an eerie appearance. Instead of smooth, continuous movements, I wanted each move to be distinct. The song’s structure is unique, with different BPMs for the intro, verses, and chorus. To create choreography that suits each feeling, I put a lot of effort into it.”
Sunmi not only wrote and composed all the songs in her digital single album but also actively participated in producing. The album is set to be released at 6 PM KST on October 17th.
