Netflix’s “Squid Game”, which caused syndrome as soon as it was released, will return with season 2.
As former BIGBANG member T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyun) confirmed his appearance in Netflix’s “Squid Game 2”, what role will he play?
On July 7th, SBS News quoted an insider of “Squid Game 2” to report on the casting controversy.
According to the report, T.O.P will appear as a retired idol who worked as a singer in the past. SBS News explained that the character required an actor who could dance as well as rap, and director Hwang Dong Hyuk chose T.O.P himself.
On June 29th, Netflix Korea posted a group photo of the newly joined actors on SNS with the caption “The game will begin again. With new faces“.
The photo showed actors Lee Jin Wook, Park Gyu Young, Won Ji An, Lee David, Jo Yu Ri, Kang Ae Shim, Roh Jae Won and T.O.P.
When the photo was uploaded, it was T.O.P who drew netizens’ attention. T.O.P challenged acting by appearing in KBS 2TV’s “I Am Sam” in 2007. Since then, he has built up his acting skills by playing supporting roles and leading roles in dramas and movies.
However, after enlisting as a conscripted police officer in 2017, T.O.P was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 2 years of probation after it was belatedly revealed that he smoked marijuana at home in 2016. T.O.P, who actually ceased activities in the entertainment industry after that, made remarks implying his retirement from the entertainment industry and announced his departure from BIGBANG through live broadcasts and comments.
Netizens waited for “Squid Game 2” with high expectations, but turned their backs on the news of T.O.P’s casting. Netizens commented, “There must be many idols who rap, dance and act well“, “I wish they could replace him now“, “I know why they cast him, but it’s not good to keep giving opportunities to such a person“…
Meanwhile, aside from actors Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Wi Ha Joon and Gong Yoo, who appeared in season 1, Im Si Wan, Kang Ha Neul, Park Sung Hoon and Yang Dong Geun will join to lead season 2.
It is known that “Squid Game 2” will start filming in the second half of this year.
