Dispatch Reveals ZB1 Kim Ji-woong’s Voice Analysis Result, “Swear Word Said By Different Voice”

A voice analysis was conducted in order to confirm whether ZB1’s Kim Ji-woong swore at fans during a recent fancall

Dispatch recently obtained the result of Kim Ji-woong’s voice analysis conducted by the Korea Forensic Science Service and organized based on the opinions of experts.

What was said in the fancall video? (Pronunciation Analysis)

Two types of footage were used for the analysis. First of all, the video released on SNS by fan K was divided into three sections, A, B and C. Another material was the CCTV footage of the event. They wanted to check whether the shape of Kim Ji-woong’s mouth in the CCTV and the sound in the fan’s video were the same.

Using “formant”, a method of analyzing human sounds, section A was “thank you”, B was “silent sound + ssibal”, and C was “it’s weird/ suspicious”.

Who said it? (Speaker Analysis)

K presumed that Kim Ji-woong was the speaker. Considering section A, it was Kim Ji-woong’s voice. However, from section B, it was recorded when the staff covered the screen with their hand. Therefore, experts analyzed the speaker according to the frequency (pitch) of each section.

The key point is section B. Although the sound in section B was in the same vocal range, which may imply the voice of one person, it’s not enough to conclude that it was Kim Ji-woong’s voice. The same applies to section C.

Was Kim Ji-woong the speaker? (Falsification Analysis)

How about the connections of the sections? Experts extended the waveform of A-B and found different values in the ‘frequency response waveform’ although it was said to be continuously recorded. At this point, the pitch and tone are different, leading to the judgment that “the voices in A-B seem to belong to different speakers with distinct voices”.

A similar result was obtained in the analysis of B-C. Experts said, “The pronunciation of voices in sections A and C seems to have been manipulated through pitch processing”, adding “The pronunciation in section B is relatively distinct compared to A and C. Section B is said to have been intentionally recorded with ‘ssibal’ without pitch processing to maximize the concentration of listeners.”

They added, “Considering the shake in the fan’s video and the movement of the subjects (the person, the phone, etc.), section B appears to have been recorded using another device and by an externally inserted voice.”

The situation of the event (On-site Staff Interview)

CCTV footage at the venue when the fancall event took place was also used as material. However, it was difficult to distinguish Kim Ji-woong’s mouth shape because it was covered by the head of the next member.

Dispatch then interviewed staff members at the scene. Each member had a staff member accompany them during the fancall. D, who was in charge of Kim Ji-woong, is an employee of a CD company. During event, D was sitting right in front of Kim Ji-woong. D and Kim Ji-woong were connected to the earphones and they could listen to the call together in real-time.

As a result, D emphasized, “I don’t remember exactly what Kim Ji-woong talked about in the conversation with K but I can say for sure that Kim Ji-woong did not swear. I didn’t hear anything like that swear word.”

They added, “Other members were still doing the calls next to us. It was not a situation in which he could swear. He can never do it during fancall event, and I did not hear any swear words either.”
