“Avatar 2” has to surpass “Star Wars 7” and “Avengers: Infinity War” to earn profits

It is reported that the sequel of “Avatar”, “Avatar: The Way of Water”, needs to post the 3rd or 4th highest gross in history to break even.

According to local media outlets such as Variety on November 21st (local time), “Avatar: The Way of Water”, has a production budget of 250 million dollars (approximately 338.8 billion won). In addition, while Director James Cameron isn’t willing to give hard numbers just yet, he did mention that the film was “very fucking (expensive)”

Moreover, the director estimated that to break even, “Avatar: The Way of Water” has “to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history”.

Released in 2009, “Avatar” created a sensation with its innovative technology and recorded a profit of 2.9 billion dollars (approximately 3.9309 trillion won), ranking first in all-time worldwide box office rankings.

The film is followed by “Avengers: Endgame” with 2.7 million dollars, and “Titanic” with 2.1 million dollars. That means, according to Cameron, if “Avatar: The Way of Water” wants to break even, it’ll need to overtake either “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2.07 billion dollars) or “Avengers: Infinity War” (2.05 billion dollars) in the fourth or fifth slots, respectively.

It is known that so far, only these 5 movies have ever crossed the 2 million dollars mark on a worldwide scale (not taking into account inflation).

On the other hand, “Avatar: The Way of Water” is a film that director James Cameron will show after 13 years following the previous movie. It will feature the ruthless threats faced by the family of Jake Sully and Ney’tiri on the planet Pandora, the long journey they have to take to survive, as well as their battles, stories, and wounds.

The movie will be released in Korea on December 14th. On December 9th, director James Cameron, producer Jon Landau, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang will visit Korea to communicate with the audience.
