The number of users of 3 major domestic OTT platforms in Korea changes drastically in a year, new report shows

The number of monthly users of the three major domestic OTT (online video service) nhg platforms (TVing, Coupang Play, and Wavve) shows a significant change in one year.

IGA Works, a mobile big data platform company, released an OTT app market analysis report through ‘Mobile Index’ on March 3rd. Mobile Index’s OTT app market analysis was conducted on data from about 2 billion mobile devices from January 1 of last year to February 19.

As a result of the analysis, the major OTT monthly user rankings in January were Netflix in 1st place (12.57 million users), TVing in 2nd place (5.15 million users), Coupang Play in 3rd place (4.39 million users), Wavve in 4th place (4.01 million users), Disney Plus in 5th place (2.16 million users), Watcha in 6th place (810,000 users).

Wavve ranked at the bottom among the three Korean OTT companies, with 18.5% of users leaving within a year. In January of last year, Wavve had 4.92 million users.

In the case of TVing, it is analyzed that the number of users has increased rapidly since the merger with seezn in December of last year. In addition, TVing’s original series “Work Later, Drink Now” season 2 played a significant role, drawing 120% of new installations and 50% of revisit rates.

It was analyzed that Coupang Play caught the attention of the younger generation in Korea as exclusive broadcasts related to overseas soccer, “SNL Korea Season 3” and “Fanta G Spot” received great attention.

Apart from this, Netflix, which is firmly at the top of the industry, has shown that it has attracted a large number of users since “All Of Us Are Dead”, which was released in January of last year, and “Narco-Saints”, which was released in September.

However, if Netflix releases a policy on limiting account sharing in the future, there is a possibility that another change will occur in the OTT industry in Korea.
