Lee Soo-man’s “Planting Trees” Song Transformed Into aespa’s Title “Drama”

It has been confirmed that aespa’s new song “Drama” was the so-called “Lee Soo-man’s planting trees” song

aespa released their 4th mini album “Drama” on November 10th. Gaining keen popularity, the title song of the same name “Drama” was confirmed to be the same song that former SM executive producer Lee Soo-man insisted on with the lyrics about “planting trees”. After the SM system change, both the melody and the lyrics have been reproduced completely.

An official from the music industry told The Fact, “The mood of the song has completely changed as they changed the melody and rearranged to make it different from the original version, especially, the lyrics has been re-written”.

“Planting trees” is what former SM CEO Lee Sung-soo mentioned in a video released in February to explain why aespa’s comeback was delayed. At that time, he revealed that Lee Soo-man insisted on adding lyrics related to planting trees to aespa’s new song so the release of the song was canceled.

As former CEO Lee Sung-soo said, “aespa members were very upset when they saw the lyrics”, The Facts obtained the chorus part from the draft lyrics of the song. In addition to “Sustainability”, which means “sustainability without environmental destruction”, the Korean lyrics of the song also include phrases intuitively symbolizing nature, such as “wind sunlight water”, “planting a tree”, etc.

“What U wanna do what U gonna do It’s all gone and I am back to be or not to be / Gotta get some new gotta get some new Start Paradigm Everything is Sustainability / Wind sunlight water Wind wind sunlight water Planting another tree with what we already have / Don’t forget to raise and see further with the word ‘co-prosperity’ This is the last call so what about” (Original lyrics of the chorus)

Overall, it’s said that while the song is about flowing under the theme of challenges and the confidence to overcome adversities, the above lyrics appear out of the blue and it shows Lee Soo-man’s desire and will to plant trees.

After erasing all “planting trees” traces, aespa’s new song “Drama” becomes a hip-hop dance song with attractive drum sounds and a sophisticated synth base. The lyrics are about the confident attitude that I am the root of all stories. The members’ unique rap and powerful high notes are combined to create a dynamic title song. The chorus expressing the song’s theme of confidence is also addictive.

“Yeah I’m coming I bring I bring all the Drama-ma-ma-maI bring Drama-ma-ma-ma / With my girls in the back Girls in the back Drama / Trauma-ma-ma-ma I break Trauma-ma-ma-ma / With MY WORLD in the back It starts with me, Drama (All that) Drama-ma-ma-ma (Bring it that)” (Current “Drama” version chorus)

The song, which was previously expressed without an identity under Lee Soo-man’s system, was transformed into the hip-hop dance song “Drama” about aespa’s braveness and confidence under the multi-production system of the SM 3.0 era.

Due to the lyrics about “planting trees”, aespa did not include that song in their third mini album “MY WORLD” for the May comeback. The title at that time was “Spicy”. The album sold more than 2 million copies and the title not only topped daily music charts but also ranked 4th in monthly digital charts in May and June (Circle Chart).

Starting with “MY WORLD”, aespa came out of Kwangya to enter ‘reality’ and delivered a refreshing and youthful energy through “Spicy”. Expanding their musicality with the intense new song “Drama”, aepsa is carrying out various promotional activities.
