After Lee Seung Gi and Lee Da In announced their marriage, many media outlets reported on suspicions of stock manipulation by Kyeon Miri’s husband.

A media outlet reported on February 10th that Kyeon Miri’s husband had engaged in stock manipulation, causing significant harm to many investors. Many other media outlets then continued to raise controversies based on this report.

The article stated that “Lee Seung Gi is expected to suffer significant damage to his image due to the marriage announcement,” and included information about Kyeon Miri’s husband’s previous convictions for false reporting of bio business investments and for allegedly inflating the stock price of a KOSDAQ-listed company that Kyeon Miri was a major shareholder of from October 2014 to April 2016, profiting 4 billion won from the sale of the inflated shares.

On February 8th, another media outlet reported, “Is it okay to unfairly accumulate wealth through inheritance? The public sentiment that had been supportive of Lee Seung Gi turned negative after news broke that he had become the son-in-law of someone involved in a past stock manipulation case.”

On February 9th, yet another media outlet reported, “There was enough evidence to suggest that Kyeon Miri’s name was used in illegal activities such as recruiting investors. She didn’t even apologize for her role and instead became a real estate mogul with the money she made from stocks.”

On February 15th, another media outlet reported that “Over 300,000 people were harmed by the stock manipulation of Kyeon Miri’s husband. If Lee Seung Gi doesn’t properly address the issue, the image he has built up as the ‘nation’s son-in-law’ could crumble in an instant.”

In response, the legal representative of Kyeon Miri’s agency promptly took action. On February 17th, they stated, “The stock manipulation case involving LUBO, which reportedly harmed over 300,000 people, has nothing to do with Kyeon Miri and her husband,” and clarified that “Kyeon Miri and her family were victims of a multi-level fraud case involving JYU and had no involvement in the stock manipulation case. Reports that her home in Hannam-dong was purchased with criminal profits and that her family was enjoying a lavish lifestyle are completely false,” and filed a complaint with the Korea Communications Standards Commission.

Since then, corrections have been issued by multiple media outlets, particularly after Lee Seung Gi and Lee Da In’s wedding on April 7th.

On March 22nd, one media outlet corrected its report, stating that “There was no evidence to suggest that Kyeon Miri’s husband was guilty of the 2016 stock manipulation case and, in fact, he was a victim of false accusations due to preconceived notions by investigators. Kyeon Miri had no involvement in the case whatsoever, and there was no mention of her being an accomplice or involved in the crime in the verdict. Furthermore, her home in Hannam-dong was purchased with money she earned through her broadcasting career, not criminal profits.”

On the same day, media outlet B also corrected its report, stating that “there is no evidence to suggest that Kyeon Miri’s husband accumulated personal wealth through stock manipulation.

On April 10th, media outlet A also issued a correction, stating that “there is no proof that there were multiple victims as a result of this individual (Kyeon Miri’s husband). In fact, in the lawsuits for damages filed by the company’s shareholders against him, the court rejected all claims made by the shareholders against him.”
