Jeon Somi Reflects on Transition from JYP Entertainment to THE BLACK LABEL

Jeon Somi, a prominent figure in the K-pop scene known for her breakthrough on the survival shows SIXTEEN and Produce 101 Season 1, recently opened up about the pivotal decision to transition from JYP Entertainment to THE BLACK LABEL.

Having captivated audiences as the center of I.O.I in 2016, anticipation surrounded Somi’s next career move after the group disbanded. Many expected her to join ITZY, a girl group featuring MIXNINE’s Ryujin and fellow SIXTEEN member Chaeryeong, especially given sightings of her with the members prior to their debut.

However, Somi took everyone by surprise with a sudden announcement in 2018, revealing her departure from JYP Entertainment to join THE BLACK LABEL, a subsidiary label under YG Entertainment. In an insightful interview with Turkids on the Block, Somi shared that the period between I.O.I’s disbandment in 2017 and her departure from JYP Entertainment in 2018 left her with few scheduled activities.

During the interview, Somi shed light on her decision to embark on a solo career, attributing it to the unique circumstances at THE BLACK LABEL where she found herself as the sole artist at that time.

“When I left my old agency for my new one, I was the only one there. So I naturally chose to go solo,” she explained.

Addressing inquiries about any regrets related to leaving JYP Entertainment, Somi unequivocally stated, “Never,” underscoring her contentment with her current agency, THE BLACK LABEL.
