Here’s why Girls’ Generation’s 15th anniversary comeback is so special (ft. 2nd gen girl groups)

Girls’ Generation’s 1st full-group comeback in 5 years carries a lot of meanings.

Debuting with the iconic hit “Into The New World” in 2007, the “nation’s girl group” Girls’ Generation recently made a comeback with a full album to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their debut. It is their first comeback with all members after 5 years since 2017.

This album by Girls’ Generation is special and historic in many ways. One of them is that Kenzie, the composer of Girls’ Generation’s debut song “Into The New World”, wrote “FOREVER 1”, their title track for this comeback. As they worked with the same composer at the beginning and the end of 15 years, this comeback feels like a walk down the memory lane.

The lyrics of “FOREVER 1” are also dedicated to the fans who have been together with Girls’ Generation for a long time. Girls’ Generation’s performances of “FOREVER 1” at music shows and SMTOWN’s concert last week have all received enthusiastic reactions from fans and the public as they make them feel nostalgic.

Another reason why Girls’ Generation’s 15th anniversary comeback is so touching is that five years ago, when three members left SM Entertainment, there was virtually no promise of a reunion.

The members said, “We’re back together now, but back then, when we each decided to find a new path, we felt like we had lost something. We were careful about what we said because we didn’t want to disappoint the fans or give them false hope. All the members cried in the waiting room.”

Currently, popular 4th gen girl groups such as New Jeans, IVE, aespa, top 3rd gen girl groups TWICE and BLACKPINK, are all actively promoting. What does the return of Girls’ Generation mean?

Girls’ Generation is not the only group that prepared for a full-group comeback. First of all, among the groups that were active at the same time as Girls’ Generation, KARA, 2NE1, and SISTAR also announced their reunions. KARA revealed that they have been working on a comeback with the whole group. 2NE1 surprised everyone by appearing on stage as four at the Coachella Festival in the US in April. SISTAR recently reunited in the 600th episode of “Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook”. More specific activities are under discussion.

EXID, which is classified as a 2.5 gen idol, is also reportedly planning to release a new song to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut. The return of 2nd gen girl groups is heating up the music industry.
