Doctor Who Prescribed Drugs To Yoo Ah-in Sentenced To 3 Years in Prison

The doctor who prescribed propofol to actor Yoo Ah-in received a 3-year prison sentence.

The prosecution asked the court to sentence doctor A to three years in prison and collect 270,000 won in a trial on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act held at the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Chamber 24 Judge Yoo Dong-kyun’s hearing on March 5th.

A was charged with self-use of propofol twice at a hospital in Gangnam-gu, Seoul last year. In addition, he also failed to report to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety about his prescription of propofol for actor Yoo Ah-in, which had been done several times.

The prosecution pointed out, “A omitted the report from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as he did not input his propofol descriptions into the integrated drug management system even after injecting propofol into Yoo Ah-in 17 times.”

A’s lawyer acknowledged all the charges, but appealed, “He made a wrong judgment due to poor health, deteriorated hospital management amid the COVID-19 pandemic, trauma and health problems,” adding, “However, please take into account that hẻ is not addicted to propofol and he do not intake a lot of doses.” The lawyer also added, “His prescriptions are close to being negligent, not intentional.” The lawyer asked for a fine, claiming it is too harsh for his license to be revoked due to the revision of the medical law.” A said, “I am reflecting on myself and repenting.”

The sentencing hearing will be held on the 4th of next month.
