BTS enjoyed the joy of winning the “2021 American Music Awards” following the “Billboard Music Awards (BBMA)”, two of the top three popular music awards in the United States. Now, the last mountain they have to overcome is the “Grammy Awards”.
The “2021 American Music Awards” was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on the morning of Nov 22nd (KST). BTS lifted trophies in all 3 categories for which they were nominated, including “Artist of the Year”, “Favorite Pop Duo or Group” and “Favorite Pop Song”.
In particular, it was more meaningful as BTS became the first Asian singer to win the grand prize “Artist of the Year”, beating out prominent pop stars such as Ariana Grande, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.
Earlier, at the “2021 Billboard Music Awards” held in May, BTS showed their potential by taking home 4 awards, including “TOP DUO/GROUP”, “TOP SONG SALES ARTIST”, “TOP SOCIAL ARTIST” and “TOP SELLING SONG”.
As such, BTS has been honored with awards at two of the three major American music awards ceremonies, which showcased their strong presence around the world. Now, all that’s left for BTS is the “Grammy Awards”.
BTS was nominated for the “BEST POP DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE” category at the “2021 Grammy Awards” held in March, but unfortunately, they were not named as the winner. The award went to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande‘s “Rain On Me”.
The “Grammy Awards” is the most prestigious award in the recording industry which is hosted by The Recording Academy (formally the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; abbreviated NARAS). However, it has been criticized for racism as well as controversy over mistreating non-English-speaking singers and music.
At the time of BTS‘s failure to win the award at Grammy, Billboard published an article titled “BTS ARMY Reacts to Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande Winning Best Pop Duo/Group Performance Grammy”. The magazine wrote, “In response to BTS’s failure, one fan said, ‘Who said BTS lost grammys? It’s grammys who lost BTS.’ Had the award gone to BTS, it would have been a historic first Grammy win for the K-pop superstars.”
While the nominees for the “2022 Grammy Awards” are scheduled to be announced early on Nov 24th, the public is paying attention to whether BTS will be able to be named as a candidate – the first gateway to the “Grammy Awards”. The “2022 Grammy Awards” will be held on Feb 1st next year.
