BTS’s hat-trick at the AMAs 2021, especially in the Artist of The Year category, has caused heated controversy.
The American Music Awards 2021 ceremony ended at dawn on November 22 (KST) with the “spotlight” of the night belonging to BTS. Specifically, the group won all 3 categories for which they were nominated, most especially, they became the first Asian artist in history to win the grand prize of the AMAs – Artist of the Year.
Not surprisingly, controversy erupted following BTS‘s victory at the AMAs 2021, especially since they took home the night’s most prestigious award, Artist of The Year.
Netizens, specifically US-UK music fans, exploded in anger and openly criticized BTS and the ARMY community following the group’s victory in the Artist of The Year category. A lot of malicious comments were directed towards BTS.
Many people have questioned BTS‘s victory at this year’s AMAs, pointing out that the boyband’s opponents were all big names and high-quality products. While listing this year’s artists such as Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Drake…, who are arguably more deserving of the win, some netizens referred to this as a “joke of mankind,” “joke of the year,”…
However, it is also important to note one thing, AMAs is an annual fan-vote award, even considered the largest fan-vote music award ceremony in the world. All awards from the main award to the minor awards in this season are completely voted by the audience through 2 voting portals: voting on the official website of the AMAs and on TikTok.
As a result, many people have pointed out that because this is a fan-voted award, BTS‘s victory is a sure bet because the boyband has a massive global fan base. BTS‘ success is due to the overwhelming support of the ARMY community, so this victory is not controversial.
