Born in 1994 in South Korea’s southern coastal region of Namhae, South Gyeongsang Province, Yoon Sung-bin is a successful skeleton racer.
Yoon Sung-bin boasted exceptional agility and athleticism as a child, and thus has always been excellent in sports even before picking up skeleton racing.
He attended Korea National Sport University, and earned the nickname “Iron Man” for his Iron Man-like helmet while on the racing track.
Career
Yoon Sung-bin started skeleton at the age of 18 in early 2012, and after 3 months of training, he won the Korean national championship in September 2012
He made his international debut in the 2012–13 season by appearing at the North American Cup Tour, and first gained attention for ranking 5th at the 2013–14 FIBT Intercontinental Cup Tour.
In his 1st Olympic season, Yoon Sung-bin finished with a disappointing ranking of 16th. However, in the 2014–15 season, the athlete finished at 6th place in the overall World Cup Rankings with 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.
In the 2015–16 season, Yoon Sung-bin earned his first World Cup gold medal in the seventh round in St. Moritz, along with a silver at the 2016 IBSF World Championships, finished the season’s overall World Cup rankings in 2nd place with 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze.
He earned another World Cup Gold Medal and ranked 2nd place in the overall World Cup rankings with 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze in the 2016–17 season.
In the 2017-18 Skeleton World Cup, Yoon Sung-bin became the first Asian athlete to ever win the overall World Cup title.
He also won a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, becoming the first athlete from outside Europe and North America to win an Olympic sliding medal.
