Why did BLACKPINK’s Jisoo accept the controversial script of Snowdrop for her first female lead role?

BLACKPINK’s Jisoo could have made better choices.

At the press conference for Snowdrop, the director revealed that he almost had to “force” Jisoo to join the cast because she suits the female lead character perfectly. But considering the current situation, perhaps agreeing to star in Snowdrop is something Jisoo should not have done.

Out of all the scripts sent to Jisoo, why Snowdrop?

Before filming Snowdrop, Jisoo is one of the A-list female idols under a Big3 entertainment agency, a visual member of global girl group BLACKPINK, an ambassador of a luxury designer brand, adored by the public… With Jisoo‘s popularity, there were undoubtedly many producers that wanted to cast her in their projects. She could have started out with a supporting role in a star-studded drama, or a leading role in safer options like a family, highschool or college romantic series.

But she ended up selecting Snowdrop. Even without the allegations of history distortion, Snowdrop still has a challenging plot. Dramas set in a historical context always contain sensitive elements. Mistakes in costumes or disrespecting real figures can erupt severe controversies. Shouldn’t YG and Jisoo have been more cautious seeing what happened to Mr. Queen and Joseon Exorcist?

A difficult movie for a rookie actor

Idols who are new to acting usually choose role that is close to their personalities in real life to easily empathize with the characters. But the character Youngro clearly doesn’t look like Jisoo at all.

Youngro is a person with an unfortunate situation: Her parents divorced, she was rejected by his stepmother to the point of having to live with her grandmther, later fell in love with Suho (Jung Hae In), but the two met many difficulties. In the first two episodes, she showed off Youngro‘s sweetness and joy well, but in the following episodes, will Jisoo be able to immerse herself in the character’s suffering? While Jisoo has never even cried in public because she is not the type to shed tears easily.

Talented cast but are not enough to ensure a high rating

Snowdrop is not the type of movie that can remain its popularity for a long period. Jung Hae In is a good actor, but he doesn’t have many high-rated movies. Except for ‘D.P.’ and ‘Something In The Rain’, ‘One Spring Night’, ‘A Piece of Your Mind’… all have not left too much impression. Kim Hye Yoon or Yoo In Na only played supporting roles. Jisoo is now the hottest factor but she is just a rookie. Therefore, the series can receive a bad result if the domestic audience turns their back on it.

Snowdrop risks being banned from broadcasting; Jisoo is in danger of being hated by the public

A petition with 300,000 signatures asked the Blue House to ban Snowdrop from broadcasting, more than 20 brands announced their withdrawal of sponsorship. In the worst case that the drama is banned from broadcasting, Jisoo will undoubtedly be affected. Previously, people knew Jisoo as the beautiful visual of BLACKPINK. Currently, she is called with the bad name of “the female lead of a historical distorting film”. Snowdrop, whether it can regain public sympathy or not, has also pushed Jisoo into unnecessary controversies.
