The group’s name “TWICE”, which was chosen by JYP’s founder Park Jin-young, carries the meaning of “a group that will touch people’s hearts twice: once through the ears, and once again through the eyes.”

TWICE, which initially started out with a sweet and cute image accompanied by extremely catchy tunes, earned massive popularity, especially in Korea. In fact, during the peak of their career, TWICE even received the title of “The Nation’s Girl Group” in their home country.

The official logo of TWICE is formed by connecting the letters “T” and “W” and is designed by one of TWICE’s members, Chaeyoung. The logo is also updated to match the concept color of every comeback.

TWICE Fandom

Matching with the group’s name, the official fandom of TWICE is ONCE. This is based on the members’ statement of “If you love us even once, we will repay your love with twice of our love”, which was published on social media in 2015.

TWICE

The group also received 3 MTV Europe Music Awards nominations and 2 MTV Video Music Awards nominations.

Even as a rookie, TWICE swept through major awards ceremonies, and the group’s 2016, “Cheer Up”, was deemed a massive hit in Korean. After “Cheer Up”, TWICE continues to drop back-to-back hit songs, cementing their position as a top 3rd generation K-pop girl group.

In 2017, the group received a commendation awarded at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards, hosted by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, given to recognize individuals or groups for their contribution to popular culture in South Korea and abroad.

Controversies

Tzuyu’s “Flag Scandal”: About 2 years after TWICE’s debut, Tzuyu became the target of criticism in China due to holding the flag of Taiwan in TWICE’s content. As Chinese people believe in the “One China” political viewpoint, they don’t recognize Taiwan as a separate country, and so condemned Tzuyu for her action. As a result, Tzuyu had to release an apology video, and TWICE was unable to promote extensively in China.

Sana’s SNS Post: Back in 2019, Japan celebrates the beginning of a new era – the Reiwa era. As a Japanese person, Sana published an SNS post about this event, which included a caption in Japanese. However, this SNS post led to Sana being heavily criticized in Korea due to the anti-Japanese sentiment in the country. At the time, many people defend Sana, explaining that she simply revealed her thoughts about an important event. However, some still accused the female idol of being a Japanese “ultranationalist”.

Jihyo’s V-live Chatroom: In 2020, Jihyo was seen using the term “웅앵웅” (translated to “attention-seeker”, which can be deemed as offensive to men) in a V-live chatroom. Meanwhile, TWICE is known to have a lot of male fans, and this action has greatly angered them. As a result, various Koreans announced that they will be leaving the fandom and expressed disappointment and anger.

Momo’s Encore: During the promotions for their 2020 song “More & More”, TWICE’s Momo became the talk of town due to her “disastrous” singing for an encore stage. At the time, Momo received heavy criticisms, causing the female idol to lose her confidence during later promotions of TWICE.

Chaeyoung’s Nazi Shirt: In 2023, Chaeyoung came under fire for wearing a T-shirt with the Nazi symbol. As she was also criticized for wearing a politic-related shirt in the past, criticisms grew heavy, and Chaeyoung eventually had to issue an official apology.

Nayeon’s Law-suit: In 2023, an ex-lover of Nayeon’s mother filed a loan lawsuit against the female idol and her mother. According to this ex-lover, he lent Nayeon and her mother over 500 million won to cover their living expenses for 12 years, only to later break up with the mother. Later on, this man asked Nayeon to pay him back the money, but did not receive anything. In the end, the court ruled in favor of Naeon due to the ex-lover not having enough evidence to prove that  there was an agreement for the return of money

Dating (Rumors + Confirmed)

Mina & GOT7’s Bambam: In 2017, a selfie of Mina and GOT7’s Bambam suddenly emerged on Chinese SNS platforms. In the photo, the two idols can be seen leaning closely together on a bed, sparking dating rumors. Regarding this, JYP Entertainment admitted that the photo is real, but denied dating allegations, saying that Mina and Bambam are simply close friends and colleagues under the same agency.

Jihyo & Kang Daniel: In 2019, Dispatch reported that Kang Daniel and Jihyo are in a relationship, and the couple often meet at Kang Daniel’s highly secure residence. Later on, the agencies of both idols confirmed the dating news. However, the couple were revealed to have broken up in November 2020.

Momo & Heechul: In 2020, it was reported that Super Junior’s Heechul and TWICE’s Momo are in a romantic relationship. Quickly after, both of the idols’ agencies confirmed the news, despite previously denying it in 2019. However, the couple broke up in 2021.

Chaeyoung & Tattoo artist: Also in 2020, rumors of TWICE’s Chaeyoung dating a 9-year-older tattoo artist emerged as netizens provide various “dating evidence”. Later on, a bracelet revealed by Chaeyoung also added fuel to this dating rumor, sparking debates. However, both Chaeyoung and her rumored boyfriend never spoke up about the situation.
