“The 9th episode of ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ is a reconstruction of history”… A surprising theory is drawing netizens’ attention

An article titled “Episode 9 of ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ about Bang Gu-ppong is a reconstruction of history” was posted on the online community FMKorea on the 29th of last month.

In the article, the author (OP) claimed that it seemed like the writer of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” wanted to convey a message related to historical figure Bang Jeong-hwan through the character Bang Gu-ppong. OP drew attention by pointing out the similarities between the appearance of Bang Gu-ppong and the achievements of Bang Jeong-hwan.

In the 9th episode of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”, Bang Gu-ppong introduced himself as the Commander of the Children’s Liberation Army and repeated the “Declaration of the Children’s Liberation” in his final statement, showing his great affection for children.

According to OP’s argument, Bang Gu-ppong’s appearance is quite similar to Bang Jeong-hwan, who led the children’s movement to liberate from the oppression and exploitation of child labor.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo

Bang Jeong-hwan is a writer and children’s rights activist who formalized the word ‘children’ in 1921 and established Children’s Day in 1923 amid the March 1st Movement in the Japanese colonial era.

In addition, Bang launched the magazine ‘Children’ to demand human rights for children suffering from oppression and exploitation of child labor. He also conducted several youth movements, including organizational activities centered on the Cheongdogyo Boys’ Association.

In fact, the production team of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” even intentionally put in a close-up shot of Bang Gu-ppong’s resident registration number in the 9th episode. In this scene, the front digits of Bang Gu-ppong’s resident registration number are 970505, which is the same as the Children’s Day established by Bang Jeong-hwan.

At the end of the article, OP said, “Perhaps the writer was trying to suggest that Bang Jeong-hwan’s efforts to demand children’s human rights and liberate children 100 years ago are in vain due to the private education culture in modern society”.

Netizens also gave various reactions to this interpretation.

I don’t know why”, “The 9th episode made me cringe a little bit but as a fun K-drama, it wasn’t bad. Everyone seemed to have high standards”, “Episode 9 was very interesting. I don’t understand why the reviews were so bad”, etc.

On the other hand, some Internet users complained, “It should have been a pleasant drama but they’re trying to turn it into a masterpiece, which makes people think of all kinds of theories”,  “Too many theories”, “It’s a good thing that they bring up social issues to raise discussion like ‘Here’s what I think. Then how about the viewers’ opinions?’, but I think the way they deliver the message in episode 9 is excessive”, “Even considering it a drama, the 9th episode is too fantasy-like. Especially, the scene where the children were called to the court was quite cringy”, etc.
