Super Junior’s Siwon Faces Backlash for Insensitive Bubble Message about Transgender People

Super Junior Siwon recently came under fire for his comment on a meme that is criticized for being disrespectful towards transgender people.

Through Bubble, a paid messaging service between fans and idols, Super Junior’s Siwon recently shared a meme containing a scene from the classic movie “Titanic” with his fans.

In it, the villain character Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane) is seen holding a child and requesting to be put on a rescue boat before the ship sinks.

The sailor said that they would prioritize women and children first. However, the character’s response was edited to become a meme that they were a transgender person trying to be prioritized for evacuation from the ship.

It seems that Siwon found this meme hilarious, as he followed it up with a comment saying, “This is funny haha“. However, most fans expressed disappointment with the idol when this meme was used to mock and belittle transgender individuals.

After Siwon’s Bubble message was spread on Twitter, netizens started criticizing Siwon. Many asked him to apologize for disrespecting transgender individuals and the LBGT community.

It’s worth noting that Siwon was appointed as a UNICEF ambassador for Asia and the Pacific in 2019. Therefore, his thoughtless action has angered many people. Currently, SM Entertainment and Siwon himself have not yet responded to the backlash.
