“Squid Game” director said he regrets killing favorite characters in the hit K-drama

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared that he deeply regrets killing the characters of actresses Lee Yoo Mi and Jung Ho Yeon “Squid Game”.

On September 16th, the cast and production team of Netflix’s mega-successful series “Squid Game”, who just returned from the prestigious Emmy Awards, held a press conference.

During the press conference, director Hwang Dong Hyuk talked about the upcoming second season of “Squid Game”.

“My next plan is to shoot the next season of ‘Squid Game’. I’m still writing it, but I believe we’ll kick off our shooting next year”, he said, adding, “It’s probably going to take about two years from now on; I’m guessing that it’ll be out in 2024. I initially planned on working on a movie after ‘Squid Game’, but I felt like that would make the gap between the first season and second season too wide.”

The director also playfully explained, “If I postpone the production too much, all actors and actresses, including Lee Jung Jae, would become way too old for it.”

Then, the director laughed and shared his regret about killing several “Squid Game” characters.

In particular, Hwang Dong Hyuk said, “Every character that the viewers loved has died in the series, so I don’t really know what to do at the moment. I had no idea that the series would make it this big! I honestly killed them too fast… I’m sorry!”

He also mentioned Lee Yoo Mi’s character Ji Yeong and Jung Ho Yeon’s character Sae Byeok, saying, “I really want to make them return from the dead, so I have lots in my head these days. I do want to bring Ji Yeong back to life, but her close friend Sae Byeok has died as well, so… I don’t know what to do.”
