Director Hwang Dong-hyuk on “Squid Game 2”: “Should I resurrect Jung Ho-yeon and Lee Yoo-mi?”

On the afternoon of September 16th, a meeting was held at the Westin Josun Seoul Grand Ballroom in Sogong-dong Jung-gu, Seoul to commemorate Netflix’s “Squid Game” winning the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards (2022).

“Squid Game” is the first non-English-speaking series to get 14 nominations in 13 categories, including Best Drama, at the Emmy Awards. As a result, “Squid Game” team won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Hwang Dong-hyuk), Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae), Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Lee Yoo-mi), Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour or More) (Chae Kyung-sun et al.), Outstanding Stunt Performance (Im Tae-hoon et al.), Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode (Jung Jae-hoon et al.), making a new history for K-content.

At the meeting today, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “My next plan is to film ‘Squid Game Season 2’. I think it will be filmed next year and released within three years from now? We are still thinking of it. I think it will take about 2 years until its release. I’m currently writing the script.”

Regarding Lee Yoo-mi and Jung Ho-yeon, whose characters died in season 1, director Hwang said, “Their characters receive much love, but I killed them off too easily without knowing season 2 would happen. I’m sorry. I’m worried because now I want to resurrect them.”

He added, “Just imagining season 2 makes me feel like my teeth are shaking and my body is falling apart, so I’m determined to do well.”

He also said, “I made all the games for season 2, but it would not be fun to let you know. I hope you keep them a secret even if you find out. If I talk about it at a drinking party, please cover my mouth.”

“Squid Game” is a Netflix original series that follows people who participated in a mysterious survival game with a tempting prize of 45.6 billion won as they risk their lives to become the ultimate winner.

On September 13th, director Hwang Dong-hyuk won “Best Director” and Lee Jung-jae won “Best Actor” at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. Season 2 of “Squid Game” has been confirmed and is set to come out in 2024.
