SM Reveals Progress of Lawsuit for BoA, Targets Even Overseas Platforms

SM revealed in detail how the lawsuit against those who posted malicious comments about their artist BoA is progressing.

On April 17, SM stated, “We have consistently collected concrete cases of malicious acts such as spreading false information, defamation, mocking appearance, and sexual harassment in posts and comments directed towards BoA, and based on this, we have appointed the law firm Sejong as our legal representative recently to file a complaint for defamation and requested prompt cooperation in investigation.”

According to SM, the list of defendants so far include users in two boards on the Korean online community site “DC Inside”, and SM has proceeded with legal procedures against those who have published and commented malicious posts insulting BoA’s dignity and honor.

In addition, SM stated that they have confirmed continuous malicious posts about BoA, including false information, defamation, and sexual harassment, on numerous online communities such as Instiz, Pann Nate, Daum Cafe “Women’s Generation”, theqoo, and other online communities as well as cyber lecture channels on YouTube, and they are preparing strong legal measures against these malicious behaviors and the spread of fake news and rumors through short-form content.

The efforts also include overseas platforms. Regarding this, SM explained, “Regarding global social media platforms headquartered overseas, since last year, there have been cases where legal responses to crimes such as defamation against artists were difficult due to the lack of cooperation from the platforms, resulting in the suspension of investigations domestically. Therefore, we are actively reviewing and proceeding with requests for cooperation and the possibility of filing lawsuits based on the location of the headquarters.”

Lastly, SM stated, “In addition to BoA, we are continuously monitoring various illegal acts related to all of our artists and separately categorizing clear cases of illegal acts for discussion with the artists, and proceeding with lawsuits promptly.”

On the other hand, BoA previously hinted at retirement via an Instagram post on the 6th. Here, the singer stated, “Can I retire when my contract ends?”, adding, “My contract is until December 31, 2025. Until then, I will do my best as singer BoA to be truly happy”.

Following this, SM announced on April 11 that they will launch a large-scale lawsuit to protect BoA from malicious comments and defamation.
