NewJeans’ iPhone advertising controversy is being review by Korea Communications Standards Commission

After NewJeans appeared with iPhone 14 Pro on a music broadcast stage, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KOCSC) is reviewing this broadcast.

In a phone call with iNews24 on August 9th, an official from KOCSC said, “Complaints about controversy over NewJeans‘ iPhone advertising controversy are continuing. KOCSC has received complaints and is reviewing the related contents. We will decide whether to raise this issue in the committee afterwards.”

The problematic part is on the July 30th broadcast of SBS’ music show “Inkigayo”. NewJeans, who recently became models for Apple’s iPhone, suddenly took out iPhone 14 Pro at the end of the performance and took pictures of each other. The performance was also broadcast through the eyes of the iPhone camera.

The images of NewJeans members holding iPhone alternately appeared on air. On the stage of about 2 minutes and 30 seconds, NewJeans directed about 20 seconds of indirect advertising. A large portion of the stage was directed as indirect advertising and even close-ups were made enough to recognize iPhone, causing controversy.

According to the Broadcasting Act and the regulations on broadcasting deliberation, indirect advertising refers to exposure of indirect advertising products, etc. that are unrelated to broadcasting programs’ content development or composition, thereby significantly interfering with the viewing flow. In addition, advertisements that affect broadcasting programs’ content development or composition are subject to deliberation.

KOCSC reviews formal parts such as the exposure degree and time of broadcasting, and KOCSC reviews the content part to see if the content of the relevant part corresponds to indirect advertising. The decision is made through deliberation by KOCSC or the plenary session.
