NewJeans uses iPhones in a music show stage, once again criticized

Girl group NewJeans openly promoted the iPhone 14 Pro on a recent music broadcast stage of their new song, “ETA”.

NewJeans filmed their music video for “ETA” using the iPhone 14 Pro, and the video footage was also used for advertisements, garnering significant exposure. The fact that the music video was shot with a mobile phone and still had high quality made it a worthwhile promotion. The concept of the music video also resonated well with teenagers, so it didn’t raise major issues.

However, the public’s reactions diverged when it came to NewJeans’ iPhone advertisement. In particular, some netizens, most of whom in their 40s, argued that as Kpop artists representing Korea with their global influence and having a direct impact on teenagers, NewJeans should show more loyalty and promotional support to Korean brands. They also questioned what Korean youth would learn from seeing their favorite group openly promoting iPhones.

Yesterday on SBS’s music broadcast stage, NewJeans once again appeared with iPhones, taking selfies in a concept similar to the “ETA” MV. There were many scenes with the phones exposed, such as members posing with their phones and passing them to each other.

This, too, sparked mixed reactions.

According to netizens, bringing the iPhone to stage is basically “shameless advertising”, and such obvious product placement (PPL) should not be okay.

On the other hand, some expressed positive opinions, leaving comments such as, “It seems like they’re continuing the music video concept, which is fresh and good”, “It’s refreshing to see different staging instead of the same old scenes”, and “Is this outrage towards NewJeans or towards iPhones?”
