aespa showed off live vocals at Coachella 2022, still criticized for lackluster dancing

It seems that despite their efforts to deliver a spectacular performance, aespa still performed like a rookie at Coachella 2022.

On April 24 (KST), the Kpop girl group aespa finally performed at the world’s largest music festival Coachella. Having received such an honor despite being under 2 years old, aespa drew quite the attention from their fans and the public alike. However, since they are the 3rd Kpop girl group to perform at the festival, after BLACKPINK and 2NE1, netizens can’t help but compare the three and pointed out certain rookie mistakes made by the SM idols.

In particular, after watching aespa’s performance, many netizens rushed to criticize the group’s lacking liveability, as well as complained about their weak dancing. However, a video of their “Savage” performance seems to have proven those people wrong.

From the video, it can be seen that aespa’s live singing was actually quite stable and full, and their charisma on the stage was undeniable. However, their movements are still regarded as not strong enough, or even lackluster. Many people also noticed the nervous expression on these idols’ faces, so they might have felt unconfident, which translated into their choreography.

Some comments from netizens:

  • The one in the ponytail is good at dancing, not sure about the rest. Their live singing is better than most female idols, but they are not quite there yet.
  • aespa’s music is simply not strong enough for partying, and their charisma was lacking compared to BLACKPINK. However, they are not as bad as what those antis have been saying.
  • Live vocals were ok, but they lacked stage experience. Not that bad to be honest.
  • aespa seemed to be shaking under all that pressure. It may be too early for them to perform at Coachella.
  • Personally, they weren’t too bad. However, rushing them was a bad move on SM’s behalf.

It seems that aespa was so focused on their vocals, that they barely had time for anything else. After all, compared to Korean stages which are filmed multiple times for the best effects, Coachella is something on a completely different level. There, the idols need to sing live, dance live, and make great expressions all at once, so SM may have rushed their rookie idols a little too much.
