Netflix Apologized for “The 8 Show” Subtitle Scandal, Netizens Greatly Angered

OTT platform Netflix has announced its stance regarding a severe mistake on some subtitles of K-drama “The 8 Show”.

On the morning of June 4, a Netflix representative told media outlet OSEN, “We have confirmed that the ‘East Sea’ mentioned by a character in the drama was labeled as the ‘Sea of Japan’ in some subtitles, and we are currently correcting it. In the process of providing subtitles in various languages, we did not thoroughly review the content. We ask for your continued interest and feedback in the future”.

Previously, there was controversy when the overseas subtitles of “The 8 Show” labeled the “East Sea” as the “Sea of Japan”. In the scene where actor Ryu Jun-yeol sings the national anthem and says “East Sea and Baekdu Mountain,” the Spanish (Latin America) subtitles incorrectly labeled it as the “Sea of Japan”.

Meanwhile, even with Netflix’s apology, Korean netizens were greatly angered, expressing frustration at the fact that the OTT platform even got something as important as the national anthem wrong.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • That’s a Korean actor in a K-drama, so why the hell did they captioned it “Sea of Japan”?
  • How do you get a whole country’s national anthem wrong like that? Was there no review or something?
  • Even the national anthem? Netflix’s credibility has fallen so low
  • It’s ridiculous that something as big as Netflix would make such a mistake
  • Can a mistake be this grave? Who in their right mind would translate a Korean line spoken by a Korean man in a Korean work, singing the Korean national anthem, into “Sea of Japan”?
