According to the broadcasting industry on Jan 31st, the production company Fantagio recently finalized a contract with a drama writer following the casting of actress Lee Young-ae for the new drama “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” (working title) in June last year.
“Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” aims to commence filming in October and target an airing date in early next year. The specific broadcasting schedule is yet to be determined, and details regarding the timing and platform remain undisclosed. In addition to the stories depicted in the original “Dae Jang Geum”, the new drama will also portray the life of Seo Jang Geum after she becomes an uinyeo (female physicians who specialized in the treatment of women during the Joseon dynasty).
“Dae Jang Geum” tells the tale of an orphaned kitchen cook who went on to become the King’s first uinyeo. It was highly acclaimed, achieving a remarkable viewership rating of 57.8%. The drama also gained significant popularity worldwide, including in the Arab Emirates.
Concerns have been raised about the remake of “Dae Jang Geum”, given the high quality of the original work. Following the news of the remake, discussions on various online platforms expressed mixed reactions, with some questioning the need for revisiting a completed work and others expressing anticipation for Lee Young-ae’s return as Dae Jang Geum. The direction of the revived “Dae Jang Geum” is being closely watched by the public.
