The first episode of Melancholia premiered last night to a good start.
On November 10, tvn’s new drama Melancholia aired its first episode. Starring the “noona-dongsaeng” duo Im Soo Jung and Lee Do Hyun with a 16-year age difference, Melancholia centers on the scandals at a corrupt private high school, and the stories of how the two main characters fight and overcome prejudices of society. Having the disadvantage of a Wed-Thu drama broadcast on a cable network, Melancholia still debuts to a fairly good start, recording an average nationwide rating of 3.6%.
At the beginning of episode 1, Melancholia is already filled with drama when the passionate math teacher Ji Yoon Soo (Im Soo Jung) is arrested and investigated for a series of school scandals. Previously, Yoon Soo openly clapped back at the hypocritical statements of principal Jeong Ah of Ah Sung High School – the school that is being labeled by the media as a “privileged commercial center”.
Knowing how corruption and preferential treatment is rampant at the school she is working at, Yoon Soo steps forward to expose the truth. However, this pushes her into a tragedy. Jeong Ah maliciously turns Yoon Soo into a morally corrupt teacher by accusing her of having an inappropriate relationship with a male student – Baek Seung Yoo (Lee Do Hyun). In the interrogation room, Yoon Soo is even asked a rude question by the police officer: “Did you sleep with that student?”. Seung Yoo, of course, does not bystand. He is determined to prove his teacher’s innocence.
Melancholia airs every Wednesday and Thursday on tvN.
