Im Si-wan Clarifies Controversy over His Pronunciation in Drama “Boyhood”: “Intentionally Abandoned Standard Language” 

The transformation of Im Si-wan in ‘Boyhood’ has been a hot topic. He recently appeared on JTBC’s “Newsroom” and talked about the drama, sharing insights and stories. Regarding the praise for ‘Boyhood,’ Im Si-wan said, “When people say ‘you did well,’ it’s a positive thing for me.“

Describing his character Byung-tae as wearing clothes that suit him perfectly, he added, “There’s nothing special, but I try my best to live as the character. It was an opportunity to reflect on my own awkwardness. I won’t forget that awkward side of me and will remind myself again.“

He shared various ideas for the character, “I thought it would be very effective to touch upon the emotions inherent in the Chungcheong Province dialect. As I delved into it, metaphor turned out to be a significant part. I wanted to incorporate this metaphor as much as possible into the drama. Most of the ad-libs I thought of were almost all metaphorical.“

Regarding the scene he wanted to explain, Im Si-wan said, “There is a line that says ‘깻잎이요’ (‘It’s perilla leaf’). When I filmed that, I wondered how to pronounce it. I knew the standard pronunciation of ‘깻잎’ (kketnip), but I intentionally used a non-standard pronunciation for the character.“

Im Si-wan concluded by expressing his desire for Season 2, saying, “I fervently want Season 2. Director, if you delay too much, it won’t be ‘Girls’ Generation’ but ‘Boy Generation.’ If you wait until ‘Old Age Generation,’ that would be fine,” sending a witty message to the director.

Finally, Im Si-wan shared his goals and aspirations for 2024 as an actor, “I hope to work as hard as I have done so far, and it would be great if I could exceed my capabilities. I would like to have the time to invest in myself.“
