Netflix’s original drama “A Killer Paradox”, starring Choi Woo-shik and Son Seok-gu, was released on February 9th. Based on the Naver webtoon of the same name, the drama depicts the story of Lee Tang (Choi Woo-shik), a college student who accidentally murders a serial killer and finds out his hidden talent of killing bad guys, and detective Jang Nan-gam (Son Seok-gu), who chases after Lee Tang relentlessly.
Apart from the thrilling and brutal murder scenes, “A Killer Paradox” also shocked viewers with a sex scene that popped out of nowhere right from episode 1 of this 8-episode series.
In episode 1, Lee Tang accidentally witnessed two customers who previously visited the convenience store where he worked part-time. One of the customers was lying on the ground, while the other suddenly approached Lee Tang and hit him severely.
Recalling how he had endured his past of being bullied, Lee Tang unconsciously grabbed the hammer he borrowed from the convenience store’s owner and hit the man, causing him to die. After committing the murder, he stayed up many nights as he felt guilty and even saw hallucinations.
However, the police later announced that the man Lee Tang killed was actually a serial killer. The man turned out to have changed his identity after being wanted. Upon discovering the news, Lee Tang felt less guilty because he actually killed a bad guy, not an innocent person. To relieve his worries, he looked for all sorts of entertainment, such as going out for a drink with his friend and having sex.
At this point, a sex scene popped out on the screen out of the blue without censoring. While the woman was completely naked, Lee Tang only took off his pants and still wore a t-shirt. Even when having sex, Lee Tang showed a cold and emotionless expression as if he felt nothing. This proved that he was still worried about getting caught murdering and alcohol or entertainment could not make him feel any better.
After watching episode 1, many viewers left reviews on SNS, saying they were completely caught off guard by the sex scene. Some pointed out that Netflix rated “A Killer Paradox” an 18+ drama but it had better been 21+ because of the excessive exposure in the sex scene.
In addition, there were also voices complaining that the sex scene was unnecessary. Pointing out that it had nothing to do with the storyline, some people believe that Netflix is overusing such provocative scenes in dramas.
