‘Squid Game’ Director Hwang Dong Hyuk dismissed the theory saying Il Nam and Ki Hoon are father and son

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk mentioned some theories about Oh Il Nam in an interview and clarified the father-son relationship of Il Nam and Ki Hoon.

On September 28, director Hwang Dong Hyuk of Netflix’s original series “Squid Game” participated in a video interview.

Regarding the speculation that Oh Il Nam (Oh Young Soo) and Sung Ki Hoon (Lee Jung Jae) in “Squid Game” are father and son, the director said “No“.

During the interview, he said, “I thought making Il Nam the first player and the designer of the game was a right choice. This is because only the first player will be given all options”.

He smiled and continued, “Il Nam wanted to participate in the game again with Ki Hoon, who caught his attention when they met outside. That’s why he had to join the game. The ‘father and son’ theory is just a theory.”

Then, he explained, “In fact, ‘Il Nam’ is the name of my middle school friend. In his name, ‘Il’ means ‘one’ and ‘Nam’ means ‘a man’, so I believed this name would be suitable for the character. Il Nam is also the player 001; that’s why I thought this name matched the story so well. His last name is ‘Oh’ because it symbolizes ‘Squid Game (Oh-jing-eo Ge-im)’. ‘Sung Ki Hoon’ is also my friend’s name.”
