Actor Han Hyo-joo was satisfied that she was able to show a new side of her by attempting various changes in terms of acting method as well as outer appearances through the movie “The Pirates: Goblin Flag.”
Han Hyo-joo told various stories in an interview with the movie “The Pirates: Goblin Flag” (Directed by Kim Jung-hoon) held online on the morning of Jan 13th. “Pirate: The Goblin Flag” is a movie about the spectacular adventures of pirates gathered on the sea to become the owner of the royal treasure that disappeared without a trace, and Han Hyo-joo plays the role of Danju Haerang, a famous pirate.
Han Hyo-joo, said, “I’m nervous and excited to say hello to you through a movie after a long time. I have a lot of mixed feelings. It’s been a while since I greeted you, but it’s also good that the movie I greeted you with after a long time is the pleasant “The Pirates: Goblin Flag.” Since I saw the script, I had thought it would be really fun to shoot this movie. And it was actually like that. Until the current promotional activities, I am working hard happily as if I really received a bonus wage,” she said.
For the Haerang character, she was trained at an action school three months before filming, and tried to become the character by carefully researching everything from makeup to clothes and accessories she wore for this movie.
Han Hyo-joo said, “It was a really new challenge for me. Whether it was a new voice or face, I thought I could bring out a lot of new aspects that I had never shown before. Of course, that’s why I had a lot of worries. I thought about how to create a character that is not awkward and attractive, so I gave a lot of opinions regarding my visual concept,” she said. “I started with a dark foundation with toned-down makeup on my face. I didn’t get tired of it either. It was fun because I felt like I brought out a new face,” she said with a smile.
“There were a lot of action scenes. I’ve previously tried some action scenes in an American drama called “Treadstone,” but it was my first time using a sword. I started training early for swordsmanship action, but I remember feeling so strange when I first heard the sword. I worked so hard that I didn’t regret it,” she recalled.
At the actual filming site, he had to complete high-level challenges such as underwater filming as well as action scenes. Han Hyo-joo said, “It was really cold. It was the first time in three years that I had to film underwater in the cold. It was so cold that when I looked at the temperature on my cell phone and it said it was minus 25 degrees Celsius, I have thought, ‘Is this number I’m looking at real?’ If my hair was wet, it froze right away and becomes ice and falls down. Even in such cold weather, we cheered each other up and finished filming,” she said.
Thanks to the difficulties that everyone suffered from, the “The Pirate: Goblin Flag” team was able to gain extraordinary teamwork. Han Hyo-joo said, “I’m really grateful to be able to meet a team like this. Our teamwork was like a gift. I suddenly felt so grateful that I was an actor in this movie. I even cried my eyes out on the last day of the shoot.”
The “The Pirates: Goblin Flag” is a movie that families can watch comfortably for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday in theaters during such a depressing time due to the pandemic. Han Hyo-joo said, “I’m really shocked by this situation right now. I think a lot of people would feel that way too. “The Pirates: Goblin Flag” was also filmed after the pandemic began, and after that, I filmed the drama “Happiness” and am still filming a work called “Moving.” Personally, I am grateful that I can continue to work like this,” she said. She added, “I hope ‘The Pirates: Goblin Flag’ will become a more meaningful movie for the audience and a work that can revitalize the theater even just a little.”
“The Pirates: Goblin Flag” will be released on Jan 26th.
