The trend figures of 5th-generation girl groups such as ILLIT, BABYMONSTER, UNIS and Candy Shop are drawing attention

According to the data released by Google Trends over the past 30 days, the trend indexes of ILLIT, BABYMONSTER, UNIS and Candy Shop were 77, 6, 9 and 1, respectively.

On March 25th, the day ILLIT debuted, the group’s popularity soared to 60 in the trend index rankings, while BABYMONSTER and UNIS recorded 2 and Candy Shop had 1.

ILLIT

On the 27th, the day UNIS and Candy Shop debuted, the two groups’ trend indexes were revealed to be 14 and 3, respectively. UNIS’s performance was rather good considering the fact that it’s from a small company. ILLIT continued their dominance with a high figure of 66. As the upward trend continued, ILLIT achieved the highest trend peak of 100 on the 30th.

BABYMONSTER debuted on April 1st amid high expectations. While ILLIT maintained its trend index at 80 on that day, BABYMONSTER’s debut index was only 21. The following day, BABYMONSTER’s trend figure returned to 10 as before their debut, leaving regrets.

Looking at the global market, ILLIT’s trend index is overwhelming. The group has never fallen below 60 since their debut and hit 100 twice on the 30th and 31st of March. Comparing the 4 5th-generation girl groups’ performances within 7 days, ILLIT was the highest, followed by UNIS, BABYMONSTER, and Candy Shop.

Especially, UNIS’s trend index stood out in the global market. From their debut day, March 27th, until the 31st of the same month, the group’s trend index stayed at 10 for about 5 days and peaked at 16 on the 28th.

BABYMONSTER

In contrast, BABYMONSTER performed lower than expectations despite coming from a big company like YG Entertainment. After reaching the peak on their debut day, BABYMONSTER’s trend figure declined and couldn’t recover. Candy Show achieved a trend index of 3 on their debut day and maintained at 1 and 2 later on.

The trend figures indeed reflected the groups’ popularity in Korea and overseas. The HYBE’s girl group ILLIT has been on the rise after releasing their mini album “SUPER REAL ME” and the title song “Magnetic”. In particular, “Magnetic” placed No.2 on Melon TOP100 chart and the album also earned remarkable achievements on the Billboard charts.

In the case of UNIS, the group aroused attention for having Lim Seo-won, who used to appear on “Miss Trot 2”. Making their debut with the mini album “WE UNIS”, the group sold more than 50,000 copies within 5 days, ranking No.8 in the first-sale charts for all K-pop girl groups’ debut albums. Their title song “SUPERWOMAN” is also charting high on iTunes chart in several countries.

UNIS

Introduced by Brave Entertainment and produced by famous producer Brave Brothers, Candy Shop gained the spotlight as soon as they debuted. Releasing the mini album “Hashtag#” on the 27th of March, the group is promoting their title track “Good Girl”.

Lastly, BABYMONSTER re-debuted with their mini album “BABYMONS7ER” on April 1st and topped the global music video trending for three days with “SHEESH” MV. The song rose to No.69 on Spotify, the highest entry record for K-pop girl groups this year. However, the heat only lasted for a few days. As such, music fans pointed out similarities between YG’s management of BLACKPINK and BABYMONSTER and urged the company to promote the new girl group in a different way.
