Director Guild of Korea Showed Condolences Towards The Late Lee Sun-kyun, “We Lost A Great Actor”

On December 30th, Director Guild of Korea made a long post in memory of actor Lee Sun-kyun on its official Instagram.

“We would like to hug him and tell him that he tried hard before it was too late,” they said.

“Actor Lee Sun-kyun really step by step climbed the stairs to the top with his own strength.” They recalled, “After seven years of being unknown at the beginning of his debut, he gained public attention for his big dramas, but he did not care about his popularity and acted in even small productions where he needed to regardless of his popularity.”

DGK also explained, “He was willing to make friendship and unpaid appearances at the request of a long-term friend, and he was never stingy or over-greedy, he made his co-stars shine in even works that would expect great fame. That’s why he was a relatively rare actor. That’s why he was brave.”

DGK said Lee Sun-kyun was busy bringing unknown actors to a drinking party and complementing them to the directors. “Director, he’s such a good actor. I’m telling you that he’s really good. Please work with him.” His voice full of emotions is still fresh in our ears. He could have become a great actor who conveys emotions with just a small gesture and a sigh in front of the camera. We lost him like that,” they added.

He also expressed regret over the investigation on Lee Sun-kyun’s drug use, saying, “The charges were announced even before they were confirmed, and the specific investigation situation and unconfirmed charges were reported in articles in real time. Accordingly, we feel deeply sorry, and it was impossible to avoid the mental burden and despair he must have experienced in the process.”

Lastly, DGK said, “We failed to protect him,” and promised, “We are ashamed, but we will do our best to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.”
