Concerns Surrounding the Ending of ‘Marry My Husband’

As the praise for 'Marry My Husband' has dwindled since its first episode, attention is now focused on whether the drama can successfully wrap up

The point where the praise halted was when the narrative took an unexpected turn with the introduction of Oh Yura (played by BoA), the former fiancée of Yoo Ji-hyuk (played by Na In-woo), which diverged from viewers’ expectations.

The viewership ratings of ‘Marry My Husband’ have been impressive thus far. The first episode aired on January 1st started with a rating of 5.2%, reaching 10% by episode 10, and achieving its highest rating of 11.8% in episode 11. However, the ratings for episodes 12 and 13 dropped to the 10% range, only to recover to the 11% range from episode 14.

The response to ‘Marry My Husband‘, which has two episodes left until its conclusion, has shifted from mostly positive in the early stages. While the drama surpassed 11% in viewership ratings in the latter half and rose to second place among all tvN Monday-Tuesday dramas in history just before its end, the increasingly dramatic development following Oh Yura’s appearance from episode 12 has caused dissatisfaction among viewers.

Oh Yura is a character failing to garner sympathy from the moment of her introduction. Despite being Ji-hyuk’s former fiancée who broke off their engagement, she did not hesitate to commit misdeeds out of jealousy, for reasons like “I don’t want anyone touching what’s mine.”

She even used Park Min-hwan (played by Lee Yi-kyung), the ex-boyfriend of Kang Ji-won (played by Park Min-young), whom she married, to carry out her misdeeds.

Park Min-hwan acted according to Oh Yura’s plan, informing Jung Soo-min (played by Song Ha-yoon) about the false claim that Ji-hyuk received 80 billion won from Ji-won. Soo-min, influenced by the idea that if Ji-won dies, Ji-won’s only family, her mother would inherit everything, conspired with her husband (Jung Soo-min’s father) to plan the murder.

Ji-won’s life was saved by Ji-hyuk during a crisis involving a dump truck accident. Afterwards, Ji-won found herself in a situation where she had to seduce Min-hwan. Unaware of this, Min-hwan, believing that Ji-won would return to him, proposed to Oh Yura to get rid of Ji-won’s mother and Soo-min’s father. Upon hearing this, Oh Yura, with a cheerful expression, instructed her secretary to “kill them” and proceeded to carry out the murder.

Most of Oh Yura’s misdeeds unfolded for simple reasons like “someone touched what’s mine.” As a result, her excessive misdeeds led to criticism of forced development. These events, spanning three episodes from episode 12 to 14, altered the overall impression of the drama, and some even remarked that the previous praise had become meaningless.

The reason why viewers praised the drama in the early stages was not for the romance between Ji-won and Ji-hyuk but for its revenge plot.

The satisfying revenge unfolding in the regression story, which relatively followed the original webtoon, was the charm.

However, the catharsis diminished when Oh Yura took a larger role than in the original webtoon after Ji-won successfully made Min-hwan and Soo-min a married couple, leading to a reduction in the screen time of the villainous characters, Min-hwan and Soo-min, who drove the drama’s fun and tension, and increasing dissatisfaction among some viewers with the adaptation.

Attention is now focused on whether ‘Marry My Husband’ can overcome concerns about the ending and achieve a successful conclusion in the remaining two episodes.
