Displaying adorable visuals and delicate acting skills, she sees this project as a potential starting point for her acting journey.
Set in the backdrop of the mid-to-late 1980s, “Boyhood”, which concluded on Dec 22nd, 2023, tells the story of students at an agricultural high school in Chungcheong Province. Jang Byung-tae (played by Im Si-wan) is a small and weak boy living in Onyang in South Chungcheong Province. He is at the bottom of the school’s social ladder so he transfers to the neighboring Buyeo Agricultural High School. There, he faces an unexpected incident that becomes a turning point in his life.
Kang Hye-won played the role of “Buyeo Sophie Marceau” Kang Seon-hwa, who shook the hearts of all the male students, and formed a tension-filled love line between Jang Byung-tae and Jeong Gyeong-tae (played by Lee Si-woo).
Sharing her process of joining the project, Kang Hye-won mentioned going through auditions about 3 times and expressed gratitude for being selected despite the director’s initial reservations. When asked about playing the role of a “knockout”, she admitted feeling pressure due to the character’s innocent image. Kang Hye-won also acknowledged that achieving 100% satisfaction is challenging but expressed a forward-looking attitude.
Reflecting on her school days, she shared that her upbringing in the countryside during elementary, middle and high school made her friends view her more as a comrade than a girl. Kang Hye-won also discussed her camaraderie with co-stars, especially mentioning her friendship with Im Si-wan and her admiration for Lee Sun-bin’s action scenes.
Transitioning to acting after IZ*ONE’s disbandment in April 2021, Kang Hye-won expressed her desire to focus more on acting than singing, hoping to evoke various emotions from viewers. She emphasized her newfound confidence through the “Boyhood” project and pledged to approach future works with a more serious mindset.
