Yoo Jae Suk won Daesang although his show ranked last in the rating chart? Viewers questioned SBS Entertainment Awards’ winner selection criteria
2022 “SBS Entertainment Awards” got slammed with criticism due to the ambiguous awarding criteria.
“SBS Entertainment Awards”, which has been criticized for distributing ambiguous award standards and no justification for the awards for the past few years, has once again been under fire for their unconvincing award standards.
This year’s “SBS Entertainment Awards” ceremony was held at SBS Prism Tower Seoul on the 17th, Yoo Jae-suk continued to win the Grand Prize (Daesang), beating Shin Dong-yup, Ji Seok-jin, Kim Jong-kook, Tak Jae-hoon, and Lee Sang-min. As a result, Yoo Jae-seok won a total of seven Daesangs from this award event alone.
Yoo Jae-suk said in the acceptance speech, “I am very sorry to Seokjin and other hyungs for receiving it like this, although I did not expect it at all. [While] I’m receiving an award today, I think the ‘Running Man’ team won it together. Thank you. I want to give all the glory to Jin. It’s definitely a great honor to be able to do variety for a long time, but we still have a lot of work to do. I think this year was the year to confirm that. As much as I’ve been loved by many people, I’ll try my best with the members and the production team to give you more laughter.”
After the speech, while the “Running Man” cast members stood up and applauded in earnest, viewers at home could not help but wonder if Yoo Jae-suk truly deserved the award and if so according to which criteria. Opinions are weighing on Tak Jae-hoon who should have won the award after boasting an unrivaled presence in SBS’s neglected “Kick the Goal” team or “My Little Old Boy” and “Dolsing Four Men.”
Moreover, rating-wise, “Running Man” is being surpassed by other programs at the same time even though it is scheduled for prime time on Sunday afternoon. Specifically, the show’s rating fell for three consecutive weeks, staying at 3.9% on the 11th, while KBS2’s “Boss in the Mirror” and MBC’s new entertainment show “Adventure By Accident” recorded 6.0% and 4.6%, respectively. Looking at the statistics alone, viewers were not convinced that Yoo Jae-suk earned his award as he was not active in other SBS entertainment shows.
In 2017, the award event was criticized for giving the Grand Prize to four non-celebrity mothers of “My Little Old Boy” and in 2020, Kim Jong-kook won the Daesang amidst the craze for “Alley Restaurant” and “Delicious Rendezvous.” In particular, in last year’s “SBS Entertainment Awards”, viewers were struck with surprise when “My Little Old Boy” received the Grand Prize despite the cast members of “Running Man” and “Kick a Goal” being mentioned as potential candidates. Public opinion criticized the award for lowering the dignity and authority of the biggest award to the point even Shin Dong-yup, a member of the cast, had to apologize.
Moreover, apart from the lack of justification, the award event is criticized for making up meaningless awards on the way. If last year’s award ceremony was criticized for the “Next Level Award”, the “Heartbreak Award”, the “Best Couple Award” and the “Honorary Employee Award”, this year’s 2022 SBS “Son of SBS” and “Daughter of SBS” awards, “Tiki-Taka Award”, and the “Scene Stealer Award” came into criticism.
In spite of their effort to introduce the concept of the “Entertainment Big Data Research Center,” the “SBS Entertainment Awards” could not create a fair and differentiated ceremony that it so much takes pride in. It seems difficult to avoid criticism again this time due to repeated disappointments.
