Yoo Jae-seok’s YouTube Show Criticized By Korean Anti-feminist For Using The Word “Baby Stroller” In Park Bo-young’s Episode
Yoo Jae-seok’s agency Antenna has been embroiled in a controversy over the use of the word “baby stroller.”
Actress Park Bo-young appeared as the guest on the show “Pinggyego” of the YouTube channel “Ddeun Ddeun,” broadcast on November 3. The video received much attention from many viewers for its comfortable chat under Yoo Jae-seok’s hosting. As usual, it has now attracted more than 740,000 views. However, an unexpected gender conflict has arisen due to the use of the expression “yu-ah-cha” (translation: baby stroller) in the middle of the episode.
In the video, while Park Bo-young and Yoo Jae-seok pronounced the word “yu-mo-cha”, the subtitle showed the word “yu-ah-cha” instead.
These two words both mean “stroller.” However, the literal translation of “yu-mo-cha,” the more commonly used word, is “mom stroller,” while “yu-ah-cha”’s is “baby stroller.” It was pointed out that “yu-mo-cha” was a misrepresenting word as it limits the caregivers who push strollers to mothers, or women, and as a result, it became a trend in Korea to use the expression “yu-ah-cha” instead. Since it is a word mainly claimed by feminists and women’s rights activists, Korean anti-feminist men (also called “Hannam”) claim that this word is misogynistic and anyone who uses it is a feminist.
This is the reason why the use of “yu-ah-cha” in “Pinggyego” has been controversial since the broadcast was released. There was a disagreement over the use of this expression in the show’s comment section, but more problems eventually occurred.
Some people became angrier as the production team deleted only the criticizing comments. On the other hand, it has been confirmed that comments that use the term “Hannam” have not been deleted, and criticism is being raised that the production team has shown support to feminism.
There are also concerns that the program and main host Yoo Jae-seok could be adversely affected. There are also criticisms that Yoo Jae-seok, Park Bo-young, and Jo Se-ho said “yu-mo-cha,” but the production team changed it to “yu-ah-cha” in the subtitle on purpose. As the controversy is growing, it is expected that the official statement of the production team will be released soon.
