Yeom Hye-ran’s Journey: From Dreaming of Teaching Korean to Becoming a Actress

On January 16th, actress Yeom Hye-ran and director Park Young-joo of the movie ‘Citizen of a Kind’ appeared on KBS Cool FM’s ‘Park Myung-soo’s Radio Show’ as guests.

Director Park shared his impressions of working with talented actors, saying, “At first, I was a bit overwhelmed. It was so good. Everyone performed so well, bringing to life what I had imagined. I was very happy on set.”

He also praised Yeom Hye-ran, “Working with her was very pleasant. She is a trustworthy actress. She will do whatever it takes. She portrayed the details really well and brought the scenes to life. Even while shooting, I watched her in admiration, thinking, ‘She can go this far.'”

Park Myung-soo also added, “Yeom Hye-ran had many intimidating roles, but when meeting her in person, she looks really young compared to her roles. Just looking at her back, I feel like asking for her phone number.”

When Park Myung-soo asked Director Park, “As a rookie director, you cast popular actors. How did you manage their pay?” Director Park replied, “I don’t handle the pay, but casting actors like this would probably be overwhelming.”

Yeom Hye-ran studied Chinese and the Yanbian dialect for the filming of ‘Citizen of a Kind.’ She said, “I’m not a language expert, but I did a little. In fact, I was trying to downplay my language abilities, but after watching ‘Noryang,’ those words really stuck with me. Many languages came out naturally. Still, I studied Chinese and the Yanbian dialect. The teacher who was recommended by the film industry was really thorough, so I learned from the basics.”

Yeom Hye-ran, who originally dreamed of becoming a Korean language teacher, revealed, “I liked the subject of Korean, and I enjoyed teaching children. I prepared diligently for student teaching. However, during my university days, while participating in the drama club, I realized, ‘This is an interesting job.’ However, choosing such a dream felt too distant, so I even took the Korean language teacher exam.”

To this, Park Myung-soo said, “Teach me acting too.” Yeom Hye-ran laughed and replied, “I might try with Korean, but teaching acting is really difficult.”
