“Why Son Heung-min can but not BTS?”, Ahn Chul-soo supports BTS’s “alternative service”

Ahn Chul-soo, a presidential candidate, expressed his position on the matter of the revision to the Military Service Act regarding BTS.

Ahn Cheol-soo, a presidential candidate said on April 25th, “I want the fair opportunities to be able to do alternative service to be given to BTS for the glory they have brought to our nation and culture, as well as young people from other areas of the same high contribution to the nation’s interests.”

“A revision to the Military Service Act is being discussed at the National Assembly,” Ahn said on his Facebook. “I think it is in line with the equity and the trend of the time to include pop culture into the existing arts and sports fields. Son Heung-min can, so it’s hard for me to understand why BTS cannot.”

“The perception that pure art is luxurious and popular art is not is a prejudice,” he said. “After years, BTS’s music will become classic as well.” He then said, “I know that people are worried if the special military service exemption is granted for popular music artists, it will spread to popular art, including dramas and movies,” adding, “But it is considered another reverse discrimination that only the popular culture sector is excluded while the alternative service benefits are given to pure art and sports.”
