According to reports from the New York Post, FOX 34 Lubbock anchor James Eppler introduced the limited-edition BTS Oreo cookies on air when he unexpectedly claimed that the cookie designs combined to spell out the phrase “Death to America.”

Eppler reportedly said, “There are 13 different designs on the cookie wafers, and when put together, they form a message to fans: ‘Death to America.’”

His co-hosts appeared visibly confused and uncomfortable before Eppler quickly laughed and corrected himself, saying, “No, I’m kidding.”

Before the controversial comment, the anchor had described the cookies as featuring BTS’ signature purple color and cream flavored after the Korean snack hotteok.

The clip quickly spread online, sparking outrage among BTS fans, known collectively as ARMY.

Many fans accused the anchor of making an insensitive and xenophobic joke, especially given the longstanding issues surrounding anti-Asian stereotypes in Western media.

Online criticism included comments such as:

  • This reporter should be fired and properly educated.
  • Ignorance, xenophobia, and racism have no place in journalism.
  • Why are Asian artists constantly treated like this in American media?

The backlash intensified as fans pointed out that BTS has consistently promoted messages of unity, self-love, and global connection throughout their career.

The controversy erupted during a particularly successful week for BTS.

At the 2026 American Music Awards, BTS swept all three categories in which they were nominated. The group won Artist of the Year, Favorite Male K-pop Artist and Song of the Summer for their lead single “Swim”.

Leader RM thanked fans during the acceptance speech, saying, “Thank you to ARMY around the world for staying by our side for 13 years.”

The latest issue has also reminded fans of another controversy earlier this year involving The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Back in February, pre-show MC Seth Herzog reportedly joked to the audience, “Anybody here from the North?” while referencing North Korea before a BTS-related recording.

The comment was criticized online as racially insensitive and targeting BTS. Herzog later apologized to BTS and their team following the backlash.

As discussions continue online, many fans say the repeated incidents reflect broader issues regarding Asian representation and cultural sensitivity in Western entertainment media.
