Viral Fashion Promoted by NewJeans and BLACKPINK: Sales Surge 16 Times in Just One Month

Matching soccer uniforms with jeans or feminine skirts is gaining attention, especially as the official sports season approaches.

“Blokecore-look” is a fashion style that styles sports uniforms as everyday wear. It’s a blend of the British slang “bloke,” meaning “guy,” and the portmanteau of “normcore,” signifying comfortable and natural style.

This term was first used in a video posted by British TikToker Brandon Huntley on December 26, 2022, interpreting the look of men wearing soccer uniforms on British streets as fashion.

The blokecore look has gained traction as a fashion trend among Generation Z, with popular female idols frequently seen wearing it. The current trend emphasizes an oversized, neutral appeal, unlike the sporty uniform look of the past.

NewJeans wore soccer uniforms in their debut song “Attention” MV. BLACKPINK’s Jennie also wore a soccer uniform in “Pink Venom” MV.

Especially with the sports season approaching, the demand for sports uniforms has increased significantly.

According to Korean online fashion commerce company Musinsa on February 18th, the transaction volume of sports uniforms on Musinsa from January 15th to February 13th increased 16 times compared to the previous period (from December 16th of last year to January 14th of this year).

With the release of new uniforms for each sport’s new season, sales continue to steadily rise.

Soccer stands out as the most prominent sport. The search volume for soccer uniforms on Musinsa increased by 150% compared to the same period.

With less than a month left until the start of the 2024 K League 1, domestic professional soccer team uniforms are receiving high attention.

As each club unveils new uniforms for this season, cases of rapid sell-outs are also emerging. On February 5th, Goals Studio, a football-inspired fashion and lifestyle brand, received a great response by releasing four types of Daegu FC 2024 season uniforms exclusively on Musinsa.

Authentic uniforms with the same design as those given to players sold out on Musinsa in just over two and a half hours, and replica uniforms also gained popularity by climbing the real-time rankings.

In the esports field with a strong fan base, uniforms are also gaining attention every season. Representative examples are the spring season uniforms of T1, DRX, and Nongshim RedForce released to coincide with the League of Legends (LoL) tournament ongoing since January.

The DRX Authentic Jumper released on February 13th rose to the top of the real-time rankings on Musinsa immediately after its release and sold out the same day.

In addition, domestic professional baseball teams such as LG Twins, Samsung Lions, and Lotte Giants are also preparing for uniform releases ahead of the season opening in March.

Shinsegae Department Store’s Gangnam Branch will host a pop-up store to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the launch of the British sports brand Umbro until the 28th.

Umbro, which began as a small laundry in Manchester, England in 1924, has long been loved by soccer players and fans. It boasts a deep history and tradition, having produced 85% of the soccer team uniforms in Britain in the 1960s. It is currently popular among Gen Z customers in line with the trend of blokecore look.
