“Violate Military Service Act” Ravi’s first appellate trial “I promise not to forget my past mistakes”

Singers Ravi (Kim Won-sik) and Nafla (Nicholas Seokbae Choi) went through their appeal trial

On the morning of Oct 30th, the Seoul Southern District Court (Criminal Division 2-3) held the first appellate trial for Ravi and Nafla, who were indicted on charges of violating the Military Service Act.

Both Ravi and Nafla appeared in court on that day. Nafla, who received a one-year prison sentence in the first trial, stood trial in a prison uniform.

The prosecution explained grounds for Ravi’s appeal, “The nature of the crime is especially malicious because he attempted to evade military service in an organized and premeditated manner.”

Regarding Nafla’s appeal, they stated, “Nicholas Seokbae Choi did engage in specific obstruction of official duty through his actual erroneous actions or decisions. However, the previous acquittal on the charge of obstructing official duty is unfair.

Nafla’s defense attorney argued, “It’s hard to consider his actions as obstruction of official duty in connection with the conscription exemption application. We claim he’s innocent based on factual mistakes and misunderstandings of the law. The sentencing is unjust.”

Ravi’s defense attorney mentioned, “The defendant deeply regrets his actions. He didn’t appeal the original trial decision. He’s currently serving as a public service worker, and his service period has been extended. We don’t think the original trial’s sentence was excessive, so we hope the appeal will be rejected.”

Through his final statement, Ravi said, “I’m living each day reflecting on the pain I caused to those who were hurt by my thoughtless choices. I strived to be a lovable presence to those who support me in society. I’m ashamed to have resorted to illegal means in that process. I made choices that caused harm to others. I continue to reflect and promise not to forget my past mistakes. If given another chance, I’ll make efforts to become a better person.
