Korean Show

Two of the hottest Netflix shows: One took 1st place because of school violence, one collapsed due to school violence

The Glory”, which depicts the horrors of school violence, has achieved worldwide success. Meanwhile, “Physical: 100” came under controversy due to the appearance of a perpetrator of school violence.

On February 24th, Kim Da Young, a stunt woman and cast member of the entertainment show “Physical: 100”, said on her personal SNS, “I’m sorry that I finally posted this after a lot of thoughts and reflection for several days. I admit that I was immature when I was a student. I used abusive and hurtful words to discipline his juniors. Even if it takes time for the victims, if the opportunity arises, I will personally apologize and ask for forgiveness.”

However, Kim Da Young said, “There are many parts of the article that raised the issue that are difficult to accept because it is different from the truth. I want to correct that part. I never took money or used physical violence. My memory may not be accurate, so I recalled it for the past few days and contacted my friends at the time and asked them. I admit to swearing, but I have never used physical violence or taken away someone’s pocket money. If false information continues to spread even about things I did not do, I have no choice but to take legal action.”

On February 14th, the controversy over Kim Da Young’s school violence arose and spread through a Korean online community. A lengthy post titled “A perpetrator of school violence is appearing on Physical 100” was uploaded, but Netflix told OSEN, “We have confirmed that the production team is currently communicating with the cast. We ask for your understanding that there is nothing else we can say at this time.”

There is a reason why Netflix and Kim Da Young’s response to the accusation was delayed for nearly 10 days. It is because it was a difficult situation when a school violence controversy broke out just before the show ended, and the production team definitely did not want attention to focus on the school violence issue rather than the show’s content. It is also speculated that they did not want to pour cold water on the impressive performance of “the first Korean entertainment program to rank No.1 on Netflix TV Show chart”. Kim Da Young, who said she was discussing with the production team, issued her apology three days after “Physical: 100” ended.

Earlier, Netflix’s original series “The Glory”, which depicts the severe school violence situation that is still happening in our society nowadays, also created a sensation. The “hair straightener school violence” scene in the drama caused the actual event to resurface. The influence of “The Glory” also spread to Thailand as Thai celebrities involved in school violence in the past got exposed one after another and had to apologize. In short, the seriousness of school violence was once again emphasized thanks to “The Glory” craze.

It is so ironic that Netflix, which is strongly criticizing school violence through “The Glory”, had a school violence perpetrator star in their program. Although Netflix officials said, “It’s hard to check the past and personal affairs of all the participants and eliminate them”, the way they delayed their response when related issues arose is unacceptable and should be criticized.

“Physical: 100” production team canceled their press conference after reports about Kim Da Young’s school violence, a former ballerino cast’s self-harm threatening allegation, and the police investigation of former national team athlete B who assaulted his girlfriend, emerged. At first, Netflix intended to highlight the global success of the show at the press conference scheduled for February 28th, but they canceled the event due to the continuous unsavory scandals of the cast.

“Physical: 100”, which became the first Korean entertainment show to top Netflix’s TV Show chart, has written a new history that deserves a big round of applause. However, it is bitter to see it ended in shame due to various behind-the-scenes controversies.
