TWICE’s New English Pre-Release Single Struggles on the Charts

On February 2nd, TWICE dropped the MV for the English single “I Got You” ahead of the release of a new mini-album later in the month. Despite drawing in impressive crowds during their world tour in America, TWICE’s disappointing chart performance of “I Got You” is raising eyebrows for a group that’s used to setting milestones.

Starting from 2022, TWICE’s standing on Korean charts has taken a hit compared to their heyday from 2016 to 2018. Despite making regular comebacks – about 1 to 2 times a year – TWICE no longer attracts the same attention.

Their achievements, especially when pitted against another 3rd gen top girl group like BLACKPINK, have been a subject of debate, with JYP facing criticism for not maintaining TWICE’s earlier momentum. “I Got You” is struggling on domestic charts.

“I Got You” is also labeled a “flop” on international charts. Debuting at #130 on Spotify and #127 on the Artist chart, pulling in just over 1.4 million streams, these numbers are modest for a group with a solid fanbase like TWICE.

Even with a focus on the US market, TWICE’s new track fails to make waves on US Spotify. On YouTube, the MV gained 10 million views in the first 24 hours, marking a significant dip compared to TWICE’s previous releases.

TWICE’s previous English track, “Moonlight Sunrise,” managed to keep a steady position on international charts. Promoted on American TV, the song boosted TWICE’s recognition in the US. Topping iTunes charts in various countries and ranking just below Miley Cyrus’s hit “Flowers” on the Worldwide chart at release, it’s clear that TWICE’s diminishing success is a cause for concern as they once achieved Perfect All-Kills with every comeback.

When we compare TWICE’s results with BLACKPINK, the gap widens. Despite infrequent comebacks, BLACKPINK still holds records for YouTube views, Spotify, and Apple Music streams among third-gen girl groups.

Let’s take a look at the latest stats – Jennie’s “You & Me,” despite being a fan song with no promotion, managed to create a trend frenzy. In the U.S. and Korea, “You & Me” holds the record for the most Spotify streams on its debut day among K-pop soloists in 2023. On iTunes, Jennie secures the top spot globally and in 55 countries and territories. Despite being an English track, “You & Me” still ranks high on MelOn.
