The Difference in How Kpop Fans Use Protest Trucks

Kpop fans have found different ways to make their voices heard, from protest trucks to hashtags advocating for fairness

While these methods can have both positive and negative repercussions for idols and their companies, they remain a prevalent means of expression within the fan community.

In recent years, the use of protest trucks has become a go-to tactic for Kpop fans wanting to voice their concerns directly to idols and their agencies. Unlike creating online hashtags or sending emails, protest trucks offer a tangible impact.

Initially motivated by the goal of advocating for fairness for their idols, this practice has, over time, devolved into a tool for boycotting and undermining artists for various reasons.

One notable incident involved Chinese fans sending protest trucks to SM Entertainment’s headquarters following reports of aespa member Karina’s confirmed relationship.

Karina’s romance with actor Lee Jae Wook, revealed by Dispatch, sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. Subsequently, both companies confirmed the relationship, triggering a wave of negativity towards Karina.

The peak of the controversy saw Karina’s Chinese fan communities deciding to withdraw support, refusing to purchase aespa’s album. These fans sent protest trucks to SM, criticizing Karina for allegedly neglecting her responsibilities to the group, betraying fans’ trust, and even threatening a decline in album sales.

In response, on March 5th, Karina issued a handwritten apology to her fans, a move believed to stem from fears of being boycotted and its potential impact on her future career.

In August 2023, Seventeen’s Joshua found himself in a similar predicament due to unverified dating rumors. Fans bombarded HYBE with protest trucks, demanding Joshua’s departure from the group over his alleged relationship with model Cho Mi Young.

Despite Pledis Entertainment’s silence at the time, Joshua’s emotional breakdown during their first concert in Japan left fans heartbroken.

Towards the end of 2023, Pledis announced they would take strict action against baseless rumors concerning their artists, indirectly refuting claims about Joshua’s relationship with Cho Mi Young.

Chanyeol and Chen of EXO have also faced fan backlash and boycotts over personal scandals, such as Chen’s unexpected announcement of fathering a child. These controversies have caused rifts within the EXO fandom.

Despite the negative aspects, some argue that protest trucks can be an effective means for fans to advocate for their idols’ rights. When used responsibly, fans can compel management companies to provide better support and care for their artists.

This sentiment was echoed by Professor Kim Si Wuel from Konkuk University, who highlighted the significant impact of protest trucks on entertainment companies, forcing them to address fan concerns.

One recent example is TWICE, whose Chinese fans used protest trucks to demand better promotion and recognition from JYP Entertainment during their latest comeback. This grassroots effort not only highlighted areas for improvement but also showcased the dedication of the fandom.

In summary, while protest trucks may sometimes lead to divisive outcomes, they remain a powerful tool for fans to demand accountability and fairness within the Kpop industry. As fans continue to advocate for their idols, it’s essential for both companies and fans to find constructive ways to address concerns and foster a healthier idol culture.”
