The Boyz New criticized for being unfriendly to fans and lacking fanservice

In a recent fancall event of boy group The Boyz, member New drew criticisms for having an alleged “unfriendly attitude”.

Recently, The Boyz held a fancall event for fans who bought the group’s 2nd Japan album “Delicious”. Here, lucky fans who won got to talk with each of The Boyz members for 15 seconds.

However, New (real name Choi Chan Hee) refused a request from a Japanese fan. In particular, he constantly shook his head and said “No” when the fan politely asked him to do aegyo (cute actions). Despite the fans’ constant request, New continued his refusal until the end of the fancall.

A recording of this fancall has since spread on social media, drawing attention. Of course, it is not a requirement for New to do aegyo, but various other occasions where New show an “unfriendly attitude” with fans have been brought up.

In particular, in an interview back in January last year, when asked about the secret behind The Boyz’s success, New answered, “I think 100% of that comes from our hard work. I’m not just saying this for show. We really, really worked hard.”

Then, when fellow member, Joo Hak Nyeon said that 99% of The Boyz’s success came from fans and only 1% came from the group’s efforts, New directly refuted him. “I have a different opinion than you”, New honestly said at the time, displeasing many fans.

In addition to this, New’s previous remarks to women on SNS has been dug up, and the male idol was also accused of ignoring fellow members in a livestream, leading to backlash.

As a result, one fan community of The Boyz on DC Inside has issued an official notice, demanding for New to leave The Boyz and stating, “Due to this matter, the number of fans joining The Boyz’s fandom has become limited, and many current fans have been disappointed and are leaving”.

Responding to ongoing criticisms, The Boyz’s agency said, “We will carefully consider ongoing criticisms from fans, and will not stop at an apology. We will try to improve and fill the gaps, as well as pay more attention so that mishaps like these won’t happen again.”

On the other hand, many fans have been defending New against the accusations, saying that New was just joking with fans in the aforementioned fancall, and cited his playful tone of voice.
