Amid recent drug controversies, netizens re-examined Seo Taiji’s confession of almost trying illegal drugs
In 2014, Seo Taiji appeared on KBS2’s entertainment program “Happy Together” and shared, “I’m always grateful to Kim Jong-seo”. He said, “Many music band members took drugs”, recalling when he almost touched it.
Telling Seo Taiji that drugs were not allowed, Kim Jong-seo prevented his friend from a crisis. According to Seo Taiji, Kim Jong-seo told him, “If you take drugs, all the music you have done so far and plan to do in the future will become ‘fake music’”.
Seo Taiji honestly confessed that he was curious about drugs but Kim Jong-seo explained to him he should never touch it. Regarding Kim Jong-seo, Seo Taiji said, “He’s the most reliable and warm-hearted brother I have. He’s like a mother to me.”
In the 1980s, many musicians were caught taking drugs, such as cannabis. They took drugs mainly due to the pressure of creating music and the desire to break their own limits. In fact, Boohwal member Kim Tae-won once revealed, “The moment you take drugs, you can immediately grab the guitar and write dozens of songs”. However, he called songs written under the influence of drugs “dead music and trash”.
Meanwhile, Seo Taiji and Kim Jong-seo became close friends as they were active together in a band called ‘Sinawe’ in 1990.
