Korean Media Criticized Overseas Fans For Creating Fake Dispatch Dating News Excessively

When watching romance dramas, there are times when viewers misunderstand that the main characters are really dating because of their perfect romantic chemistry on the screen.

In particular, rumors of a romantic relationship between Lee Jun-ho and Im Yoon-ah arose while the two were starring in JTBC’s drama “King the Land” together. Recently, Lee Se-young and Bae In-hyuk, who form a romance in “The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract”, were also embroiled in dating rumors.

Chemistry is needed for the completeness of romance dramas, and being able to make viewers doubt their real relationship is considered a compliment to the actors’ acting. However, many overseas netizens have crossed the line as they even created fake dating news.

Looking through overseas drama fans’ SNS accounts, there are many posts about dating rumors with photos edited by combining drama scenes with behind-the-scenes footage, making the actors look like they are really dating.

In the case of SBS’s ongoing drama “My Demon”, some people spread scenes and screenshots from behind videos of Kim Yoo-jung and Song Kang in online communities to create fake dating rumors as a joke.

What’s worse is that some even added the logo of Korean media outlets that often reported dating news, such as Dispatch, in the photos, making others believe that the dating rumors were really reported by the media. Fake rumors were shared widely and aroused enthusiastic reactions with thousands of likes from Internet users as if they were true.

Such behaviors of overseas fans can be considered mass production of fake news, which has been among the social concerns recently.

Following such fake dating news, fake news about someone in the entertainment industry being married or dead also spreads uncontrollably. As such, overseas netizens and Korean netizens need to be cautious not to harm celebrities as many of them have been complaining about damage caused by fake news and struggling to eradicate incorrect information.
