IU receives uplifting news amid plagiarism controversy

The MV for IU’s title track “Lilac” from her 5th full album, released in 2021, has surpassed 100 million views.

On June 21st, IU‘s agency, Edam Entertainment, announced that the YouTube views for “Lilac” MV had surpassed 100 million views at 6 p.m KST.

Among IU’s songs, “Palette,” “Eight,” “Blueming,” “Celebrity,” “Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms,” and “Through the Night” MVs have each recorded over 100 million views, while “BBIBBI” has surpassed 200 million views. With “Lilac” surpassing 100 million views, IU now has a total of 8 songs with over 100 million views on YouTube.

Meanwhile, in May, IU was reported to the police by an individual, A, for alleged copyright infringement regarding a total of six songs: “The Red Shoes,” “Good Day,” “BBIBBI,” “pitiful,” “Boo,” and “Celebrity.”

In response, IU’s side stated, “We will hold accountable those who made indiscriminate reports.” They also mentioned that they would hold the complainant responsible for their actions.

Subsequently, on June 20th, the German band NEKTA claimed, “Since 2013 until now, no one, including IU, Loen Entertainment (former agency), and Edam (current agency), has responded or contacted us regarding our attempts to address the controversy over the similarity of ‘The Red Shoes’ on multiple occasions.” This has sparked another round of controversy.

In response, on June 21st, IU’s agency, Edam Entertainment refuted NEKTA’s claim and released an email sent to NEKTA in 2013z

Edam Entertainment said, “We have confirmed that NEKTA recently sent an email, and as it is a significant matter, we have conducted legal reviews and sent a response on June 20th.
