“Taiwan is China” (G)I-DLE Yuqi faces criticism after her Chinese variety show appearance

Yuqi, a Chinese member of (G)I-DLE, is facing backlash from Taiwanese fans due to her remark on a Chinese variety show.

On July 17th, an interview video of (G)I-DLE’s Yuqi and Minnie was uploaded on the official YouTube channel of Zhejiang Satellite TV.

In the video, the producer asked Yuqi and Minnie to say a few words to their “Chinese fans”. To this, Yuqi responded, “This time, I will visit Taiwan, and next, I plan to visit Hong Kong.”

The female idol also added with a smile, “I want to give (you guys) a little surprise. If you have time, please pay a lot of attention (to us).”

Previously, Yuqi had expressed support for “One China” through her official Weibo account. “One China” is the belief that the Chinese mainland, as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, etc., cannot be divided and that the legitimate government of China is the People’s Republic of China.

As a result, Yuqi faces criticism after her Chinese variety show appearance, with Taiwanese fans showing disappointment in her implication of Taiwan being a part of China.

Some also pointed out that (G)I-DLE member Shuhua is from Taiwan, so Yuqi’s action lacks consideration towards her group member.

Meanwhile, on July 14th, (G)I-DLE released their first English digital single, “I DO”, and has been on their second world tour to meet international fans.
