Chinese Netizens Criticizes “Exhuma” Poster Edit Trend Among K-pop Fans

The trend of editing idol pictures with words on their faces like “Exhuma” posters sparked controversy

Along with the popularity of the Korean occult movie “Exhuma”, many Korean fans took inspiration from the “Exhuma” poster and made edits by photoshopping Chinese characters on the face of their favorite idols and it became a trend among K-pop fans.

However, Chinese netizens expressed disagreement with this trend and criticized K-pop fans for lacking knowledge about culture. In particular, they pointed out that drawing words and characters on the face has a negative meaning as it is similar to an ancient Chinese custom in which words were tattooed or drawn on the faces of criminals.

In many cases, K-pop fans just picked up random Chinese words and photoshopped them onto their idols’ faces, probably because they don’t understand Chinese, making the edited images look somewhat ridiculous and meaningless

Reacting to the spread of “Exhuma” poster edit trend among K-pop fans, Chinese netizens commented, “They stole the idea without knowing what it means”, “They don’t even understand the historical background of the custom but still make it a trend. You guys need to learn more about Chinese culture”, “I’ve been laughing at the edited pictures for 2 minutes straight”, “They really know nothing about Chinese culture. So embarrassing”, “Only criminals have words drawn on their faces”, “I wonder if they understand the meanings of these Chinese characters before editing them onto their idols’ faces?”, “Why didn’t you guys use Korean characters?”, etc.
